Slippery Rock University has recently received accreditation for the School Counseling Program at the master's level in the department of counseling and development.
They were accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP). The Master of Arts in community counseling is a 51 credit hour program based upon the standards of the CACREP.
CACREP is a national board which promotes excellence in the professional preparation of master's level counseling practitioners and master's level professionals in related fields of study.
"We are proud of our most recent acceptance," said Jay Hertzog, dean of the College of Education. "The hard work put forth by faculty in the department and across the college shows the level of commitment we have in continuing to build on SRU's reputation of providing rock solid education to all of our students."
Only six schools in Pennsylvania are accredited and only three are in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. Edinboro and Shippensburg University are the two other schools that are accredited along with SRU.
Though it is not a requirement in Pennsylvania to be accredited by CACREP, it is required in many surrounding states.
Since the university is accredited, this allows students a great deal of opportunities for their future. CACREP is well known by most professionals and employers.
Employers are more likely to hire students who received a degree from a school that is accredited because they generally have a higher level of counseling skills and employers know the student received quality education.
Students who wish to get their doctoral degree will also find that it is much easier coming from a school that is accredited. Since SRU has been accredited by CACREP it allows students who are in the program a great deal of benefits.
