Lead by sophomore Oliver Horrigan's five goals, the Slippery Rock University men's water polo team beat Washington and Jefferson, 12-10 in overtime Saturday night.
Horrigan also picked up an assist and one steal in the victory. Arseni Grokhoyski added to the effort with his four tallies, an assist and two steals.
The team improved its record to 13-3 for the season.
The winning effort was helped by junior goalie Glenn Reepmeyer, whom coach Jim Yeamans said he considers a key player on the team.
"Having guys like Oliver and Reepmeyer on the team brings a lot to the table," Yeamans said. "It allows us to take chances that we otherwise wouldn't be able to take. Many times when the opponent is keying in on Horrigan, it will open up opportunities for other guys."
Reepmeyer averages about 17 saves a game, which Yeamans said is twice as much as the average for most goalies.
Even with the win, Yeamans said he felt the team played its worst game of the season.
Yeamans said the team is currently on a seven-game winning streak because of the group of men he has playing for him.
"They are a mature team with some very good veterans," Yeamans said. "Rookies such as Sean Casella provide a lot of support as well. He isn't making all the goals but he is a steady player and takes care of business."
Yeamans said the team is focused and has no problems showing up for practice or playing hard in a game.
"In spite of having a lot of young guys I could, and I have, taken out all six of my starters and put in six players from the bench, and they play just as well," Yeamans said.
During the match two other key players were Eric Olson, who had two assists and two steals, and Ryan Holt, who added two steals for the Rock.
This weekend SRU hosts the Hunkler Shootout. It is a two-day event in the Morrow Field House pool. A few of the teams in the league will be at the invite, but Yeamans said the Rock is treating it as more of a practice. The shootout doesn't affect how the team will place in the league standings, although it will be on the overall record.
Yeamans said the team is working to improve offensively, and plans to treat this weekend as an opportunity to advance.
