Football ready for 2005 edition of storied clash

A Storied History

1957- The Rock ruins Indiana's homecoming celebration. The Rock 7, IUP 0

1959- The Rock ruins IUP's homecoming once again. The Rock 34, IUP 7

1988- Indians give first-year head coach George Mihalik a tough loss. IUP 38, SRU 0

1989 - Indians rout the Rock at home. IUP 52, SRU 7

1994- Indians add insult to injury scoring on a fake punt with 40 seconds left in the game on a night after several of the Rock players were forced out of their apartments on Kiester Road after a firre broke out. IUP 62, SRU 14

1996- The Rock falls by a narrow margin to the Indians after IUP blocked a Rock extra point attempt with two minutes left to play. IUP 32, SRU 31

1997- The Rock ends a 13 game losing streak to the Indians. SRU 16, IUP 9

1998- D.J Flick catches a 52-yard "Hail Mary"

pass from Randy McKavish at the final buzzer to give the Rock its second consecutive victory over the Indians. SRU 27, IUP 21

1999- Randy McKavish throws two touchdown passes in a Rock rout of the Indians. The Rock 52, IUP 14

1999- IUP defeats Rock in first round of NCAA Division II playoffs. IUP 27, SRU 20

2002- Postgame fight breaks out after Rock falls in overtime. Players from both teams earn one-game suspensions, as well as the respective schools cheerleaders and bands a one-year ban from performing at the other team's stadium. IUP 34, SRU 28 (OT)

2004-Chris Morgan rushes for 187 yards and one touchdown to lead the Indians to victory. IUP 34, SRU 13



The Slippery Rock University football team looks to reach the .500 mark for the first time this season as it travels to rival IUP for its Pennsylvania Athletic State Conference (PSAC) Western Division game tomorrow.

After starting the season with three losses against non-conference opponents, the Rock has won two straight against PSAC West teams and outscored its opponents in the two games by an 83-28 margin.

"It's a new team that finally realizes what they can do when they play with confidence," coach George Mihalik said. "It's a very positive feeling in the locker room."

The Rock (2-0 PSAC West, 2-3 overall) is currently tied for first place with Edinboro in the PSAC West. IUP (1-0 PSAC West, 2-3 overall) is currently in third in the division followed by California, Lock Haven, Clarion and Shippensburg.
