SRU Vice President of Student Life Robert Watson and SGA President Julie Hepner discuss budgetary issues after the Co-op meeting last Thursday.

Vice President of Student Life Robert Watson addressed the Student Government Association yesterday about the major construction projects taking place on campus.

"If you have not taken action to complete the survey, which was mailed to every Slippery Rock University student, the deadline is (today)," Watson said. "I would encourage you to make your opinions known (about the new Union)."

As for the new residence halls, Watson said they will provide at least 700 beds. He said he is impressed that they are ahead of schedule.

"Here on campus, we have the largest certified construction project across the nation," Watson said.

He said SRU's housing project has already been used for other university's housing projects.

Watson said students will be impressed with the size and the natural lighting of the rooms.

During the University Union open forum, the issue of 24-hour visitation policies in the residence halls was raised.

In the current constitution of the Association of Residence Hall Students (ARHS), 80 percent of students in each hall must vote in favor of allowing a 24-hour visitation of people of the opposite sex.

The current policy was passed by the Council of Trustees because it's what the students wanted at the time.

There are new plans for staff to be at the front desk of the halls at all times and to require new passes that would make it impossible for people to sneak in.

Students who wish to change the policy must go through ARHS, Watson said

In other news, Vice President of Administrative Affairs Jenny Craig said she was contacted by someone from Clarion University of Pennsylvania about a competition to raise money for Hurricane Katrina victims.

Slippery Rock has already raised $6,800. Clarion would like to begin a competition with SRU to see who can raise $10,000 first.

Craig said she is looking to make this a campus-wide and semester-long competition.

SGA also reaffirmed support of a fall break.

If installed for the 2006-2007 academic year, students will be granted a proposed 4 day weekend during the fall semester, Kurt Sterling, vice president of academic affairs, said.
