Starting this year at the Navy Open, big wins over Iona, Fordham, MIT, and Queens NY, helped the Slippery Rock University men's water polo team open up the season with an impressive 4-0 record. The team went into this past weekend going into one of the toughest tournaments of the year. The Bucknell Invitational would raise the stakes a little when SRU would take on some of the nation's powerhouses, including Navy and Johns Hopkins.
On the first night there, team goals from Sean Casella, Ryan Holt, Oliver Horrigan, and Andy Stiebler were not enough to help the Rock upset the strong force of Johns Hopkins University. The Rock would end up defeated in the opening game 10-5.
The Rock would follow up their loss facing the home team, Bucknell, the next day. Three goals from Sophomore Oliver Horrigan helped the Rock slip by the Bison on their way to a 6-5 triumphant win. Junior Goalkeeper Glenn Reepmeyer had 19 saves on his way to an impressive game. Junior Ryan Holt added two other goals and freshman Sean Casella added another.
In the second game on Saturday, the Rock went up against Salem International. Although, Reepmeyer had another stellar performance with 13 saves, it was not enough to hold back the authoritative offense of Salem International. Once again the Rock's Oliver Horrigan was the high scorer with two goals against their opponent as Ryan Holt and Junior Aaron Chapple added two goals collectively. The Rock wrapped up Saturday with a 7-4 loss.
SRU coach Jim Yeamans felt that the win against Bucknell was not enough. "We need to be more consistent out there. We need to be more explosive on offense," Yeamans said. "We have a good team we just need to start coming together."
Slippery Rock went into the last day of the invitational with a 1-2 tournament record and an overall season record of 5-2.
On Sunday morning the Rock faced Iona for the second time this season. Oliver Horrigan came through again with three goals in the game. Senior Arseni Grokhovski, who spent his summer in the Naval Academy Premier League, put together a magnificent performance with two goals, an assist, and a steal. Sophomore Eric Olson added on two goals and Sean Casella had a goal and three steals. In the 8-7 overtime win, Glenn Reepmeyer came out and had 17 saves.
The coach was very impressed with his presentation in the invitational. "Glenn Reepmeyer was our high point of the tournament. He was huge against Bucknell and Iona."
With a 6-2 record, Slippery Rock faced their fiercest opponent yet. "The Naval Academy team is so deep with players," Yeamans said, "Every time you look up [they have] new players in the water."
With a loss to Navy, the Rock ended the tournament with a 2-3 record and a 6-3 overall record.
"These were really tough tournaments." The coach paused. "But this was the first year we opened some eyes."
The water polo team heads off a doubleheader with Mercyhurst and Penn State Behrend at the Morrow Field House on Saturday.
