The Slippery Rock women's volleyball team downed the Lady Golden Eagles in a 3-1 victory on Tuesday night for its third straight win.
The Rock is now 10-3 overall.
The match marked the opening of PSAC West play. SRU ended the match in four games, coming from behind in the first two, losing the third and beating Clarion's women 30-18 in the fourth.
The Rock's Lindsay Weber set a team-high 17 kills and 16 digs in filling the shoes of sophomore Andrea Campbell. Adding 15 kills and five blocks was Louise Schultz while Anastasia Urbanik had 14 kills and five blocks. In the mix, Gwen Oberlin joined in the effort, adding another team-high of 21 digs, Sara Kirsch recorded 55 assists and 18 digs, and last but not least Layna Heilman-Houser helped to bring in a win with her 15 digs.
"Clarion obviously is a good team, and for the most part they had the same team they had last year,"Rock coach Laurie Lokash said.
Lokash said the team played solidly. The Rock has a strong defense, and much of this season was spent strengthening weaknesse such as offense, and preparing a young team for court time.
"People are really stepping up and performing the roles they need to," Lokash said. "They are all playing for the team and not for themselves, which is what is helping us to be so successful so far this season.
The Rock will now take on IUP tomorrow. Last year SRU lost twice to the Indians, both in five games. Lokash said she recalls the one loss on senior night when SRU was up two games, and IUP came back to beat them.
"They are a talented team," she said. "I wouldn't call them a rival but because they beat us last year it would be nice to beat them this year, especially since we are on our home court. A win is never a certain thing, but it certainly is their goal. I just want the girls to play hard and the outcome will be beneficial."
Lokash said the team is cautiously optimistic about the season. As of now, its' record shows the team has the makings of a talented group.
"Our girls are dong a great job," Lokash added. "They have a wonderful attitude, and they play for the team not for themselves. This will get us far this season."
