The Newman Center hosted a "Big Easy" dinner Thursday night to benefit the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
"This event was intended to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Katrina while bringing people together, regardless of faith," the Rev. Jim Armstrong, director of the Newman Center, said. "Everyone understands the need to help others."
Armstrong coordinated the event along with the help of Campus Minister Diane Magliocca.
The dinner incorporated a Cajun Creole theme, with a wide variety of authentic dishes. Food for the event was donated by members of the community as well as by local restaurants and businesses. North Country Brewing Co., Luigis, AVI and Giant Eagle all donated their services to the fundraiser.
The dinner was open to the public and took place from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Donations for admission to the dinner were $2 for students and $3 for the public.
"Turnout for the event was better than expected with over 250 people in attendance throughout the night," Magliocca said.
The dinner raised a total of $850, all of which will be given to Catholic Social Services for distribution to the relief effort of the Hurricane victims. The American Red Cross estimates that nearly $2 billion will be needed to cover the cost of emergency services for the Hurricane Katrina victims, with donations being a crucial part of their funding.
The evening also included New Orleans-style music and a 50/50 raffle to benefit the hurricane victims.
"I came to donate money to the hurricane victims and for the food," senior biology major Candice Lubbert said. "It was delicious."
The Newman Center also hosts additional events once a month for fundraisers and free dinners on holidays.
