Technology tools more useful than students think

This week I'm going to talk about campus resources available to Slippery Rock University students. I don't claim to be an expert on this one, but I do know about the technology that I use frequently and a little bit about what can be found around campus.

Many students are unaware that there are ample resources provided by the campus and academic departments alike.

Then again, many students also think that college is for partying so a lack of involvement with educational tools shouldn't surprise anyone.

Let's start with the essentials. You all know as well as I do that going through college these days you're going to be writing a lot of papers in Microsoft Word and presenting material via PowerPoint. There are tons of labs around campus that provide the facilities to do this.

To name a few: Bailey Library, Spotts 105, Eisenberg 120, McKay 010, the University Union and all of the residence halls. To supplement those, most departments have a lab for their majors. A few of these are: the IT lab in Eisenberg, the Geography lab in Spotts, and the PT lab in, you guessed it, the PT building.

In addition to using Word and PowerPoint to do your assignments, you're probably going to need to print some class materials. Printers are available in every of the classroom building labs previously mentioned. There are also printers in the residence halls in the lobby but they're getting pretty strained this year with everyone in the building printing to just the one printer.

Now folks, if you've been griping about the residence hall printers, then your alternatives are the classroom building labs. You can print in almost any classroom building on lower campus and most of the upper campus buildings.

If you're trying to find a lab to print in your classroom building then go to http://www.sru.edu/pages/3234.asp. This page lists most campus labs including departmental labs. If a lab is owned by a department you're allowed to use it if you're enrolled in a class offered by that department. If you're hard up for a lab you can probably use any departmental lab, just play it cool and they seldom ever check to see that you're in the department.
