The Slippery Rock University women's water polo team took another one-goal loss last weekend.
This time, the 9-8 loss came at the hands of Mercyhurst College in Grove City.
Coach Jim Yeamans was frustrated.
"It seems to be the story of the game and also the story of the season," Yeamans said. "They capitalized on their chances one more time than we did."
The one-goal loss is the second in a row for Slippery Rock, who lost to the University of Notre Dame 6-5 at the Miami of Ohio Invitational two weekends ago.
Despite the best offensive efforts of two-goal scorers Beth Choike, Sarah Cicero and Amanda Zychowski, the Mercyhurst offense proved to be one goal too much in the end.
Yeamans said the offense must be aggressive.
"They've got to be more aggressive out there and shoot the ball when given the opportunity," Yeamans said.
Amanda Miller and Kelly Leibolt each recorded three saves.
Cicero also added an assist, and Zychowski also recorded two steals in last Saturday's match. Erika Brunner and Bethany Helmus added the other two goals.
The rest of the offense consisted of an assist by Amie Marshall and a steal by Rachelle Stice.
With the loss, Slippery Rock is now 2-2 against Mercyhurst on the season, with a 9-18 overall record.
The Rock's next game will be tomorrow morning at 10:20 a.m. against Connecticut College at the Grove City Invitational in Grove City. Slippery Rock will also play Pittsburgh at 1 p.m. and Grove City at 8 p.m.
If Slippery Rock wins its game on Tuesday against Penn State-Behrend, it will be seeded sixth in next weekend's Grove City Championship.
The Rock is trying to avoid powerhouse Michigan University, who will most likely be the second seed in the tournament. Rather than play Michigan, Yeamans and his team are trying to get revenge on a team such as Gannon or Mercyhurst. One of those two will most likely take the third seed in the Grove City Championship.
PSU-Behrend has not had a lot of success so far this year, but at this point Slippery Rock cannot take any team lightly.
Yeamans and his team remain confident going into the Grove City Invitational this weekend and the huge game on Tuesday.
"Everyone on the team needs to improve a little bit more so we can be on the other side of a one-goal game for once," Yeamans said.
The Championship will consist of eight teams including Michigan University, Indiana University, Gannon College, Mercyhurst College, Grove City College, Penn State-Behrend, Washington & Jefferson College and Slippery Rock University.
