The Slippery Rock men's and women's track teams both took home first place in the PSAC West challenge in Clarion Saturday.
The women's team finished with 207 team points, 24 points higher than the second place team, Lock Haven, which had 183. The men had 179.5 points, finshing 12.5 points ahead of second-place finisher, IUP. SRU, Lock Haven, Mansfield, California (Pa.), Clarion and Edinboro all competed in the event.
On the women's side, Kristen Jones won both the 100 and 200-meter dashes, taking the 100 in 12.54 and the 200 in 25.85. Heather Kozochowsky won the shot put with a throw of 44-11. That mark is an improvement on an NCAA provisional qualifying standard already set by Kozochowsky this season. Abby McKissick won the pole vault at 11-0, and Christie Taras took the discus with a throw of 133-5, her personal best. In the javelin, the Rock took the first three positions as Katherine Speerstra won the javelin with a throw of 131-3. Calista Shoaff got second with a throw of 129-1 while Amber Moore was third with a throw of 126-0. Sonya Daugherty took first place in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.89.
Second place finishes for the Rock women included Jennifer Pondel in the 5,000-meter run at 20:10.31, while Dana McCain followed her in third at 20:19.96. Jill Rekich finished second in the 400-meter hurdles at 1:06.41 and Kristen Jordan finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 12:15.84. The 4x100 (49.97) and 4x400 (4:08.03) relay teams each finished second.
On the men's side, the Rock also took first place in the javelin, thanks to Tony Carr's throw of 199-3. Dave Pavone took second with a mark of 196-7. Both marks are good enough to be NCAA provisional qualifying standards. Tim Tray won in the pole vault with a mark of 15-1, Preston Gibbs had a 21-8 mark to win in the long jump and Eric Price threw 47-0 to win in the shotput.
"Probably some of the bigger highlights included Tony Carr and Dave Pavone both hitting provisional marks," coach John Papa said.
Mark Morelli qualified for the PSAC Championships with a second-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:50.40.
Andrew Cohen finished second in the discus with a throw of 144-4, Ben Ostrowski finished second in the triple jump at 42-0 and Steve Brenner finished second in the high jump at 6-5. Paul Schwab followed Brenner in third place with a jump of 6-3.
