Matt Walsh finished in a tie for 18th place, leading the way for the Slippery Rock golf team as the Rock placed sixth out of 13 teams to finish off the spring season in the Bob Raymond Invitational yesterday.
SRU hosted the Invitational at the Oakview Golf Club.
Walsh was one of three players in the tournament who carded a 77, which was eight strokes off the individual pace set by Scott Micklewright of Millersville. SRU shot a team total of 313, only 10 strokes off the pace set by Millersville.
IUP was second with a score of 305, followed by West Liberty State at 307.
Junior captain Adam Scott said that it was good for SRU to end the spring season strong.
"We played okay as a team today," Scott said. "We ended the season on a better note than the rest of the season."
"It was nice here (in Slippery Rock) for the last couple weeks so we had time to go out and hit some balls and get some practice in," he said.
Scott and Chris Marron were only a stroke behind their teammate with 78's, finishing in a tie for 21st place. Each recovered in the later part of their rounds by shooting 36 and 37 on the back nine, respectively.
Burnie Smucker tied for 37th place with an 80 and Adam Schuster rounded out SRU's finishers with an 84.
Scott said the dry conditions made for a tough golf course.
"It was very difficult today," Scott said. "The greens were very, very hard. It was hard to stick a ball on the greens."
SRU also competed with many of the same teams and finished 10th out of 17 teams at the Cecil Spadafora IUP Invitational the day before.
The Rock finished with a team total of 305, 12 strokes off the pace set by Clarion.
Walsh was one of nine players in the tournament who carded a 73, which was six strokes off the individual pace set by Mathew Hicks of West Liberty State.
Scott and Schuster also played well for the Rock on Wednesday, as they both carded 77's. Marron finished one behind his teammates with a 78 and Smucker shot an 82.
Both events fielded all five PSAC golf programs as well as many of the best teams around the Eastern Region.
SRU finished the season strong, but Scott said the team didn't play as well at it would have liked this spring.
"I'm disappointed in myself," Scott said. "As the team captain I expect to have the best score at every tournament. We wanted to put together a good season for our seniors (two), but it didn't happen."
The golf team is very optimistic coming into next season with a couple transfer students joining the program. The team also has a couple solid young recruits joining Slippery Rock.
"Our one (Scott), two (Walsh), and three (Schuster) men are coming back," Scott said. "We're looking to be very competitive coming next fall."
