Melissa Lowrey swings away against California Tuesday afternoon. The Rock dropped both games of the doubleheader to the Vulcans.

After winning eight straight games, the Slippery Rock softball team has lost three out of its last four games in PSAC West action.

During the eight-game winning streak, the Rock surpassed its win total from last year, 15 wins, and now owns a 22-12 overall record and is 6-6 in the PSAC West. The 22 wins is the best mark since the Rock set the school record with 23 wins in 1980.

"We have improved well in all categories from last year and the freshmen class has really came in and made an impact on the season," coach Vashion Johnson said.

Last Thursday, the Rock swept out-of-conference foe St. Vincent by the scores of 3-0 and 6-1.

In game one, the Rock bats were held in check by St. Vincent through the first couple of innings, but freshman Brittany Hahn pitched a complete game one hitter for the Rock and sealed the victory in the low-scoring affair.

In the fifth inning, the Rock got an RBI fielder's choice from freshman Andrea Murdock and an RBI single from freshman Alicia Dixon.

Murdock went 3 for 4 with a run scored in the fifth inning and a RBI single in the sixth inning to produce the Rock's third run of the game. The Rock had nine hits coming from six different players in the game.

In game two, freshman Laura Campbell had two RBIs and a homerun as freshman Stacey Rhoades went 2 for 3 with two runs scored to lead the Rock on the offensive side of the ball. Senior Kate Krochmal, freshmen Jamie King and Melissa Lowrey each had two hits and one RBI each.

Sophomore ace Courtney Conron pitched five innings and allowed no runs on two hits. Conron struck out four and walked two in the game while helping herself at the plate by going 1 for 2 with an RBI single.

The Rock hosted and swept Edinboro by the scores of 12-3 in five innings and a 2-0 victory in game two last Friday.

The Rock pounded out 12 hits in game one and defeated Edinboro by nine in only five innings. The Rock's offensive effort was highlighted by junior Niki Banner's grand slam in the second inning. Banner went 2 for 3 with five RBIs and two runs scored in game one.
