Slippery Rock women's water polo split its four games over the past weekend at the Miami of Ohio Classic Invitational en route to finishing sixth overall.

In the first game on Friday, the water polo team defeated Illinois University 6-5 in sudden-death overtime on Amie Marshall's breakaway goal.

The offense, led by Erika Brunner, Amanda Zychowski and Marshall, each contributed two goals to the winning cause.

Coach Jim Yeamans said he was pleased with the victory but was unhappy the game had to venture into overtime.

"We should have closed out the game in regulation," Yeamans said. "But I'm happy that we got the victory."

Brunner led the team in assists, piling up five, while Marshall and Zychowski each had one steal and one assist. Rachelle Stice recorded two steals, and Bethany Helmus and Lisa Sobincinski both added an assist and a steal.

Goalie Amanda Miller had 11 saves for Slippery Rock.

The Rock was handed a 9-3 loss in its second game against Cal Poly on Saturday afternoon. Brunner, Zychowski and Sobocinski each had a goal in the effort against Cal Poly.

"We hung tough for a while but Cal Poly's experience paid off in the end," Yeamans said "They play some big-time competition out there in California."

Miller compiled eight saves and two steals in the loss.

In the second game of the afternoon, Slippery Rock bounced back from a bad loss to beat Emory University 10-6.

"The girls always show up to play, they really do battle no matter who they're playing," Yeamans said.

Once again, Brunner led the way for the Rock's offense, scoring three goals, dishing out one assist and also grabbing a steal in the victory.

Beth Choike and Sarah Cicero each got in on the offense against Emory scoring two goals each. Rose Schiavone and Zychowski also added a goal each, and Zychowski and Choike combined to have 11 steals.

Stice and Sobocinski combined for eight steals, and Marshall and Sarah Sander each added an assist.

Miller had 11 saves in the game, and Kelly Leibolt also turned away three shots as the Rock's goalie.

Going 2-1 in three games earned the Rock a chance to play for fifth place against the University of Notre Dame. However, SRU came up one goal short, as they have in four games this season, losing 6-5.

"They just made one more play than we did," Yeamans said. "They are a real good team, and they play hard."

Brunner played her part against Notre Dame, compiling three goals and adding four steals. Marshall and Stice had a goal and an assist each.

Helmus, Cicero, Sobocinski and Zychowski combined to total six steals and two assists but in the end the Rock came up one goal short.

With the 2-2 record over the weekend, Slippery Rock is now 9-17 overall on the season.

The next game will be played against Mercyhurst College in Erie tomorrow afternoon. Slippery Rock is 2-1 this season against the Lakers.
