Saturday morning marked a milestone for SRU women's athletics when the new women's soccer and softball complex was dedicated in a ceremony.

The ceremony began at 11 a.m. at the complex located on Harmony Road adjacent to the softball field. Dignitaries included Robert Watson, vice president of student life, Paul Lueken, athletic director, women's soccer coach Noreen Herlihy and softball coach Vashion Johnson. Also attending the ceremony were the players from the women's soccer and softball teams.

Lueken opened the ceremony and introduced some of the sports administration including Jeff Michaels, assistant to the athletic director, Carrie Osborne, assistant to the athletic director and Mike Saraka, director of alumni.

The players and spectators gathered on a deck outside and Watson began the ceremony.

"It's a great day for Slippery Rock women's athletics," Watson said. "I'm very pleased with what we have. It's a facility with attractive locker rooms and it's a facility that I hope is used a great deal."

Watson said during the ceremony that Slippery Rock women's athletics have been ahead of the other programs.

"All in all, Slippery Rock women's athletics have been light years of the other 13 in the state system," Watson said.

Johnson was then introduced and thanked the administration for the building.

After the ceremony, Johnson said this was a memorable day for the softball program.

"This is a big day for Rock softball, it was great to have the alumni back," Johnson said.

Herlihy and women's soccer assistant coach Sergio Gonzalez were next introduced.

"It's a great time for women's soccer here," Herlihy said. "Since I've been here, I've seen a tremendous improvement. All the women appreciate that."

Gonzalez was then asked to give his thoughts to the crowd and he echoed Herlihy's sentiments.

The first and second-team players were then introduced. The first-team all-PSAC players were Sarah Arsenault, Emma Wright, Cheryl Wickerham and Jaimi Wilson. The second-team from SRU included Julie Kirwan and Lauren Steele.
