Niki Banner (LEFT) runs the bases during the first game yesterday against St. Vincent. The Rock swept both games of the doubleheader, winning the first game 3-0, and the second, 6-1.

The Slippery Rock softball team went 5-3 over the past week entering PSAC West play.

Last Thursday, the Rock faced non-conference foe Seton Hill in doubleheader action at the Harmony Road Field, sweeping both games, 3-0 and 5-4.

In the first game, sophomore Courtney Conron tossed a three-hit complete game shutout.

Providing the offense for the Rock was freshman shortstop Stacey Rhoades. Rhoades smacked a two-run home run in the sixth to give Conron all the runs that she would need in the game.

In game two, freshman Brittany Hahn recorded her sixth win of the season by pitching a complete game. The Rock, after giving up two unearned runs in the top of the first inning, came right back and scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Seton Hill scored one run on two Rock errors in the second inning to tie the game up at 3-3. Sophomore Carrie Casoni led off the fourth with a single and scored on an RBI double by freshman Melissa Lowrey. Campbell got her second RBI of the game by hitting a double that scored the winning run for the Rock.

"One of our strengths this season has been our offense, and whether it be our starting line-up or our bench, we are hitting well," coach Vashion Johnson said.

The next day, the Rock split with IUP in doubleheader action. IUP won the first game by the score of 11-5, outhitting the Rock, 10-6.

IUP scored three runs in the first inning and then added two more runs in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead. In the bottom of the fourth, the Rock got two solo home runs by Rhoades and Casoni to cut the deficit to three.

Rhoades then tied the game up in the fifth by hitting a two-out, three-run home run, but IUP had a three-run homer of its own and put up four runs in the sixth inning. IUP then added two more runs in the seventh to secure the win.

In game two, the Rock surrendered four runs in the first two innings.

In the bottom of the second, the Rock got a two-run homerun from leadoff hitter Andrea Murdock. Senior catcher Jesse Gump tied the game up at four with a two-run single in the second.
