As another spring semester winds down at Slippery Rock University, the traditions of April once again emerge and make themselves known; sporadic sunny weather, longer and brighter days, freak snow storms, and, of course, Greek Week.
Greek Week is a week-long competition for the social fraternities and sororities at SRU, and includes events such as volleyball, kickball, swimming games and billiards. The main focus of Greek Week is to raise $3500 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the amount needed to make one wish come true.
Only Greek organizations affiliated with the Interfraternity Council (IFC) and Panhellenic Association are allowed to compete in this event, meaning that all honorary and service fraternities and sororities cannot participate. The competition started on Sunday with Greek Sing, and ends on Saturday with chariot races, track and field and goofy games.
Greek Sing was the first event of this year's Greek Week, in which fraternities and sororities competed in various song and dance categories. The organizations participated in three separate rounds of competition; formal song, informal song and partner song.
Delta Zeta sorority took top honors for formal song with "I Will Remember You," followed by Sigma Sigma Sigma's "Lean On Me," and Phi Sigma Sigma with their performance of "I'll Take Care Of You."
For the fraternities, Alpha Sigma Phi took first place for their rendition of "One Thing," followed by Pi Kappa Alpha's "Outside" and Pi Kappa Phi's very own "The Rose Of Pi Kappa Phi."
"Greek Sing ran very smoothly," said Cathie Sadler, coordinator of Greek Affairs. "We raised a little bit over $1,000 and we are excited about that."
Informal song competition was next and organizations were given more leeway in what they could do on stage. Fraternities had to choose songs from a list of the "top 40 most awesomely bad songs" and sororities had to perform remixes of whichever songs they chose.
Alpha Sigma Phi's medley of "She bangs/Hanging tough/Red, white and blue" evoked great emotion from the crowd. The fraternity elicited laughs when member Daniel Hooven went up on stage alone, and performed an acappella version of William Hung's, "She bangs."
