During the first Slippery Rock University Student Government Association meeting since March 2, SGA Vice President of Student Life Kami Yurisinec announced yesterday that their discount card campaign has attracted five responses to date, with the hopes of getting at least 20 more businesses to commit.
The Exchange Store, Collective Communications and Massage and Wellness are a few of the confirmed businesses, and Ginger Hill tavern, Bob's Subs and Sheetz are a few of the businesses the campaign hopes to get, Yurisinec said.
The campaign intends to make it possible for SRU students to use their student ID cards for discounts at area businesses.
Yurisinec said another reason for the campaign is to promote a better rapport between the students and the community.
"There are a lot of enthusiastic people involved with this campaign, and overall it's looking pretty good right now," Commuter Senator Chris Spudic said.
Also in SGA, the Board of Cooperative Activities failed a motion to fund up to $500 to provide a bench at the Dodds Hall "happy bus" bus stop.
Vice President of Financial Affairs Mario Bernardi said the main reason the money was not given was due to the new dorm building being erected by 2006, and the Dodds Hall bus stop will not be used anymore.
He also suggested possibly putting a bench at the base of Normal Avenue, near Old Main and Maltby Center.
In other SGA news:
President Jude Butch said they recently conducted feasibility study interviews to determine who will be the architect for the University Union rebuilding/renovating. He said the field has been narrowed down to two potential architects and will be decided in the following weeks.
Butch also said he and several other SGA members will be attending the Pennsylvania State System Advocacy Day on April 11.
Vice President of Advancement Lindsay McGhee said SGA is still selling personalized bricks for the pedestrian corridor to raise money for the senior gift, a 9/11 memorial.
University Program Board Vice President of Major Events Tim Stevenson announced that country music singer Trace Adkins will be the major concert at SRU this year on April 25.
Yurisinec also said this was her last SGA Senate meeting due to her special education practicum. She still holds her position until the end of the academic year.
The next Senate meeting will be held April 7 at 12:30 p.m. in room 206 in the University Union.
