The Slippery Rock wrestling team placed second in the NCAA Division I East Regionals on March 4, falling only to Duquesne University.

Trailing second place by 20 points heading into the final round, the Rock rallied to finish the tournament with a total of 69.5 points, while Duquesne took first place with 77 total points. Millersville placed third with 66.5 points, Gardner-Webb finished fourth with 54.5 points and Delaware State rounded out the group with 36 points.

Coach Derek DelPorto said he was pleased with the strong finish by his team and that it should leave optimism and high hopes for next season.

"The team saw that the potential for years to come is huge," DelPorto said.

Three Rock wrestlers qualified for the NCAA National Championships in St. Louis, Mo. Charlie Pienaar (184 pounds), Cory Mancuso (157 pounds) and Garry Price (165 pounds) won regional championships for their weight classes in the tournament. Seven Rock wrestlers have earned the right to compete in the National Championships in the past two seasons, the most in a two-year time span since 1982-83.

After receiving a first round bye, Pienaar defeated Duquesne's Zach Hawk at 5:31 in the semifinals, and won a 5-1 decision over Millersville's Mark Knock to win the championship. With his two victories, Pienaar improved his season record to 29-8, the best winning percentage among 184 pound wrestlers in the PSAC. Pienaar also received the outstanding wrestler honor during the weekend.

Mancuso also received a first round bye. He defeated Gardner Webb's Adam Glaser by a 3-0 decision in the semifinals and beat Duquesne's Jon Denk by a 7-6 decision to win the championship.

After receiving a first round bye, Price won a 10-0 majority decision over Delaware State's Josh Keitt, and won a 6-3 decision over Brendan Couture of Gardner Webb to win the championship.

Mancuso and Price will take records of 21-14 and 14-12, respectively into the National Championships.
