The Slippery Rock women's water polo team lost two of three games this past week.
Gannon College beat the Rock, 12-8 in the first game Saturday. Gannon jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, which also happened the last time the two teams met at the Hunkler shootout on Feb. 26. SRU lost the game by a score of 7-6 after mounting a comeback, only to come up short in the end.
This time, SRU came all the way back from the 4-0 deficit, tying the score at 6-6 after a 6-2 run. However, leading scorer Erika Brunner had to leave the game after the comeback with a badly injured face and concussion symptoms.
Gannon scored four unanswered goals after Brunner's injury, putting the game out of reach.
"It seems Gannon is just making one more play than we're making," coach Jim Yeamans said.
Amanda Zychowski and Amie Marshall led the way for the Slippery Rock offense, scoring two goals each. Zychowski also added an assist and a steal, and Marshall had two steals.
Slippery Rock goalie Amanda Miller had four saves, three steals and also added a goal, her first of the season. Shallow-end goalie Kelly Leibolt had three saves and a steal against Gannon.
Brunner added another goal to her already team-leading total before being injured and Lisa Sobocinski and Rachelle Stice also scored a goal each. Bethany Helmus also helped out with an assist.
In the second game against Mercyhurst College, the offense was steady and spread out.
Beth Choike, Zychowski, Stice and Marshall accounted for two goals each in the 9-7 victory.
With Brunner out, other players picked up their offensive game.
"If we can distribute the ball around like that every game, we'll be a dangerous team," Yeamans said.
Sobocinski had the other goal while Helmus added two more assists.
Miller compiled five saves along with three steals and Leibolt had four saves and five steals.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Rock battled against Gannon again, and came up short, losing 8-7.
