The Rock's men's and women's track teams started off the outdoor portion of the season this past week with meets at Florida State University and Coastal Carolina University.
At Florida State, the men's pole vaulters, a traditional strong point of the team, were able to capture first and second place overall. Tim Tray, who earned a trip to the National Championships with a vault of over 16 feet, finished first and teammates Erik Dravonstott and Corey Corbett tied for second overall.
"This is what they've been doing all year for us, our pole vaulters are just really good," assistant coach Jeff Magley said. "They all did a great job."
The Rock's core of javelin throwers were eager to get back outdoors last week after sitting out through the indoor season. Javelin is not contested in indoor track due to the limited space of the facilities used for indoor competition.
"They just wanted to get back out there and throw," Magley said.
The javelin throwers made the most out of their first opportunity with strong showings on both the men's and women's side. At Coastal Carolina, Tony Carr finished second in the event with a throw of over 197 feet while teammate Dave Pavone finished fifth. Carr also finished third at Florida State. For the women, Calista Shoaff and Amber Moore finished second and third overall.
"It was a great meet for them and they did extremely well in their first competition," Magley said. "They are going to have a great season."
Distance runner Holly Whoolery had a good road trip with a fifth place at Florida State in the 3,000 meters and a third at Coastal Carolina in the 5,000 meters.
"She had some injuries in indoor and she didn't race that much, but now she's healthy and ready to go again," Magley said.
Heather Kozuchowsky qualified for the NCAA National Championships in shotput in a performance that earned her a second place overall finish at Florida State.
"She had a great indoor season and we knew that she was going to be good when the outdoor meets came along," Magley said. "She's picked up where she left off."
Kristen Jones was the only other Rock athlete to win an event with a first place in the long jump at Coastal Carolina. She also placed third at Florida State.
Other notable performances for the Rock were third places by Abby McKissick (pole vault), Michael Heisner (110-meter hurdles) and Shayne Cooper (400-meter hurdles).
All-Conference triple jumper Preston Gibbs did not compete on the road trip. He was at the NCAA Regional Championships in which he finished ninth overall. The Rock will next be in action at Clarion in two weeks.
