The Slippery Rock softball team has started the season out strong in both pitching and batting, which carried the team to a 9-4 record on its trip south during spring break.

"Our pitching staff is keeping us in games and we are hitting very well and being aggressive in our at bats," coach Vashion Johnson said.

The Rock lost its season opener on March 6 to Georgia Southwestern by the score of 11-3 in six innings in Savannah, Ga.

The Rock only had three hits as a team and committed three costly errors to give Georgia Southwestern three unearned runs.

Sophomore third basemen Carrie Casoni homered for the Rock in the third inning to produce the Rock's first RBI of the season. In the sixth inning, senior catcher Jesse Gump drew a bases loaded walk for her first RBI of the season.

Sophomore pitching ace Courtney Conron pitched five innings while allowing nine runs on nine hits. Conron recorded four strikeouts and six walks.

Freshman shortstop Stacey Rhoades hit a game-winning two-run homerun to give the Rock a 3-1 victory over Bluefield State.

The next day, the Rock beat Quincy 5-3 with strong performances by Rhoades on the offensive side and Hahn on the pitching side.

Rhoades went 4 for 4 with a double and a run as Hahn earned her second victory of the season by pitching five innings and allowing two runs on eight hits.

Casoni continued her hot hitting by going 2 for 3 with two RBIs.

Later that day, the Rock had a rematch with Bluefield State, but the Rock came out on the losing side by way of a 4-3 loss.

Conron pitched a complete game and allowed three earned runs on seven hits while striking out seven.

Rhoades had two hits and Casoni had an RBI double. Freshman Alicia Dixon batted as the designated hitter and went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs.

The Rock's last two games in Savannah came against Savannah State and the Rock crushed the ball in both games, winning 18-3 in the first game and 18-0 in the second game on March 8.
