Oscar winners not deserving of harsh criticism
Issue date: 3/18/05 Section: Rocket Letters
To the Editor:
This is in response to comments made about Hilary Swank winning the Best Actress Award for her performance in "Million Dollar Baby." In case you forgot, here is what you had to say about Swank:
"Having starred in such M-list movies as "Kounterfeit,", and alongside Patrick Swayze in "11:14," you could say Swank came out of nowhere, or you could simply say that she will eventually go back to that lovely place of nowhere, or you could say both."
Hang on a minute there Colin-y Col-Col-Cologne Man. In 1999, Swank won her first Oscar - the Best Actress Oscar, mind you, for her portrayal of a young woman who lives her life as a male in "Boys Don't Cry." Two Best Actress Oscars in five years. You're right, she's headed nowhere.
Yeah, "Saw" was an entertaining movie, but come on, Cary Elwes' performance in that movie was downright laughable and pitiful. To quote you once again, in reference to Elwes' performance:
"Who thought the guy from "A Princess Bride" could lose the accent, gain 680 pounds and still come through in the clutch by performing at a level higher than any one of those stuffy heads in the room this past Sunday night."
Are you kidding me?! Have you seen "Million Dollar Baby"? "Sideways"? "Finding Neverland"?
If that is actually your honest opinion and not just your way of finally upsetting me, then you lose at knowing good movies and can go back to praising "The Boondock Saints" like every other college student in the world. I can appreciate your attempt to amuse yourself within the confines of your own column, but if you are going to criticize movies/films, please know what the hell you are talking about.
