With the Slippery Rock University Union MPR adorned with glowsticks, black-lights, club rap, and sorority girls, it was obvious that "Rockin' Rave" was the theme at the fifth annual All-Campus Alcohol-Free Mix-Off.

Despite being the celebrated drinkers holiday, St. Patrick's Day, roughly 400 people attended the event, which was sponsored largely by SRU Greek Life and University Program Board, with AVI Food Service, AAA, and PennDOT also contributing.

In all, 17 groups participated in the non-alcoholic evening.

"We're definitely happy with the turnout tonight," Interfraternity Council President Mike Shupe said. "There's a real cool vibe going on."

The winners of the mix-off were: Best in Show: Association of Residence Hall Students (ARHS); 1st Runner Up: Hope Peer Education; 2nd Runner Up: Kappa Delta Pi; and Most in Attendance: Student Union for Minority Affairs (SUMA).

The winning drink, called "The Ragin' Readhead," included cherry and strawberry Kool-Aid, frozen orange juice, frozen lemonade, sugar, ginger ale, and ice.

All winners received trophies provided by AAA. The winner for Best in Show won four tickets to Cedar Point provided by AVI, and 1st Runner Up won five large one-topping pizzas, three large bags of chips, and a case of Pepsi, also provided by AVI.

Senior Anne Floros said she thought the event went well, considering it was held on St. Patrick's Day.

National Residence Hall Honorary President Jenny Craig helped run her organization's booth. She said she agrees that the mix-off could have drawn more people had it not been that night.

"St. Patty's Day is a well known drinking day, but there are still a good number of people over 21 here, so that's cool," Craig said.

Junior Matthew Pavelek, who is over 21, said the event was especially good for those people that either don't drink on school nights, or don't drink period.

"People are going to party on St. Patrick's Day anyways, so this thing offers a good alternative to getting drunk at the bar or at your buddy's place," Pavelek said.

Besides the mix-off itself, other activities included a D.J., t-shirt decorating, and an Irish inspired dance by Erica Wolfe, Kim Karnes, and Kim Smith of ARHS.
