Faculty, managers and students from across the state came together yesterday for the opening reception of the "Women of Color in the Academy: Our Struggles, Successes and Future" conference held on Slippery Rock University's campus.
This is the second annual conference for women minorities and the first to be held at SRU.
Assistant Vice President of Human Resources and Diversity Renay Scales wrote a proposal for a social equity grant that was awarded by Chancellor Judy Hample's office, making the event possible.
Scales, the chairperson of the conference, said that a similar reception was held a year and a half ago at Bloomsburg University and while attending that event, she thought it would be great to hold a conference at SRU.
The event was put together by a conference steering committee and a regional conference team.
The steering committee was made up of Shari Clarke, vice president for student affairs at Mansfield University; Charmaine Clowney, director of diversity and equal opportunity from the office of the chancellor; Elizabeth Iglesias, assistant professor of academic support services at Edinboro University; Linda Matthews, assistant dean of the graduate school at Kutztown University; Alicia Redfern, associate professor of psychology at Bloomsburg University; Victoria Sanders, director of social equity at East Stroudsburg University and Adelle Williams, professor of gerontology and health and safety coordinator at Slippery Rock University.
The regional conference team was comprised of DaNine Fleming, director of intercultural programs at SRU; Francene Haymon, professor at SRU's counseling center; Jessamine Montero, director of Act 101 at SRU; Christine Pease-Hernandez, assistant professor of communication at SRU; Rachela Permenter, professor of English at SRU; Latrice Scott, equal opportunity generalist/recruiter in the office of diversity and equal opportunity; Iglesias and Lakshmi Tata, assistant professor of social work at California University.
