Slippery Rock women's water polo took a big step in the right direction last Saturday, winning two out of three games in the Hunkler Invitational.

In the first game, the Rock water polo team took a tough loss against Gannon, losing by one goal, 7-6.

"It was disappointing," coach Jim Yeamans said. "We had a couple of chances to win that game but it's tough when you get down early."

Gannon jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, which proved too much for Slippery Rock to overcome.

Amanda Zychowski and Erika Brunner contributed two goals each in the failed comeback attempt against Gannon, and Amie Marshall and Sarah Cicero scored a goal each.

After surrendering four quick goals, Amanda Miller settled down, tallying nine total saves in the game.

The Rock used the loss against Gannon as motivation against Grove City College, pounding Grove City on both sides of the ball and winning by a score of 14-1.

"These girls are turning into seasoned vets," Yeamans said. "After the Gannon loss, we took the next game (against Grove City) as a challenge."

Marshall and Beth Choike had a big game offensively, scoring four goals each. Brunner added three more goals, and Ashley Goodwill and Lisa Sobocinski each scored a goal against Grove City.

Miller and Kelly Leibolt combined for nine saves against Grove City.

Brunner and Rachelle Stice led the way against Mercyhurst College en route to a 12-5 victory for SRU. Cicero and Choike each had two goals, and Zychowski, Sarah Sander and Bethany Helmus got in on the scoring frenzy with a goal each.

With the 2-1 record on Saturday, the Rock improved its record to 3-9.

Slippery Rock will host Grove City College, Indiana University and Michigan University in a weekend round-robin tournament, which is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. tonight and continue onto Saturday.

Indiana and Michigan are both nationally ranked, and will be tough opponents. Yeamans and his team should be up for the challenge.

"We have an opportunity to play some of the elite teams in the country," Yeamans said. "We're going to find out where we stack up."
