On Wednesday, the Rock lost a hard fought battle with IUP, 52-49. The game was a strong defensive affair as both teams held each other to under 34 percent shooting.
"We competed better in this game than the past two games, but we just turned the ball over too much and made some mistakes in a close game," coach Laurel Heilman said.
Senior Stacey Green had one of her best games in the losing effort with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Green recorded her fifth double-double of the season in 38 minutes of action. Green is averaging 12.2 points and 8.2 rebounds per game this season. She is currently ranked third in rebounding and 10th in scoring all-time at SRU.
Junior guard Amber McFeely chipped in with 12 points and five assists in the game. McFeely now has 118 assists on the season and she is the only Rock player to start each of SRU's 21 games thus far. McFeely set the Rock's single-season record for assists a year ago with 180.
Besides Green and McFeely, there were only three other Rock players to score. Junior guard Kristen Bonner added three points, sophomore Amanda Chojnacki had eight points and freshman guard Angela Greaser scored five points off the bench.
"I would love to shorten our bench and only have seven or eight players play a game, but we are just inconsistent and nobody has had a stretch of good games for us," Heilman said.
IUP led by seven, 15-8, with 10:58 remaining in the first half when the Rock struck back with a 12-2 run to take a 20-17 lead. IUP scored 10 unanswered points in the final 5:47 of the first half to take a 27-20 lead at halftime.
The Rock came out confident in the second half and went on a 10-1 run to tie the score at 37 at the 7:45 mark of the second half. A McFeely layup at the 6:01 mark gave the Rock a four-point lead, 41-37.
However, IUP kept itself in the game and captured the lead for good at the 4:51 mark and never looked back. Late three-pointers by McFeely and Bonner kept the Rock in the game until IUP hit two crucial free throws to seal the win with two seconds left.
