The Slippery Rock hockey team rebounded after a disappointing weekend in State College with two wins last weekend.
Last Friday, the Rock came from behind and beat Robert Morris University 4-2 and the next night in Cleveland handed an 8-5 loss to John Carroll University.
Jason Kortz played strong after giving up the first two goals of the game against Robert Morris, and kept the Rock in the game, paving the way for a Slippery Rock comeback. Sean McIntyre started the comeback with a goal in the second period off assists by Joe Daw and Matt DiSanti. Tim Snyder then tied the game with help from Dan Dugan and Steve Meyers. Daw then put one past the goaltender for a score and the Rock lead. Kortz kept stopping shot after shot and ended the night with 36 saves for a .947 goals against average.
"This was a good game," coach Tom Ward said. "Kortz did real well in front of the net for us."
In the game against John Carroll, goals by Dugan, Mark Runco, John Preffer, McIntyre, Snyder, Meyers and two by DiSanti sealed the deal for the Rock, as SRU avenged its 6-4 loss to the Blue Streaks on Nov. 20. The Rock capitalized on three penalties and led the entire game. Sean Holt made 34 saves and held the Blue Streaks in check the entire game.
"We played harder and skated harder (than in the first meeting)," Ward said. "We came ready to play. Penalties hurt us a little bit, but we capitalized on theirs."
Snyder added two assists as well as his goal, and Daw added three assists against John Carroll.
The Rock plays host to Rochester University in what Ward calls a must win game Friday at 9:40 p.m. In their last meeting, SRU crushed Rochester 10-3, and Ward is looking for the same type of result this time around.
"We did very well against them last time," Ward said. "The key for us will be to stay out of the penalty box, if we play as well as we did last time, we should get the win."
