Sliders baseball team returns for summer

Prospect league provides opportunity for local talent

After a one-year absence, the Slippery Rock Sliders are back as part of the 2009 Prospect League season. The Prospect League is a wooden bat, summer league for collegiate players. The Sliders were originally apart of the Frontier League, an independent professional baseball league.

SRU students help St. Jude research

More than 250 students gathered in the Aebersold Recreation Center on Nov. 21 for SRU's second annual "Up 'til Two for St. Jude" event to raise money for pediatric cancer research, conducted at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. St. Jude is one of the world's first research and treatment centers for pediatric cancer, and the only pediatric cancer research center that does not charge for treatment not covered by the patient's insurance.

A 'Celebration of Hope' for World AIDS Day

Dec. 1 marked the 20th anniversary of World AIDS Day, and several members of the SRU community got together to help the fight for a cure. World AIDS Day started Dec. 1, 1988, and is focused on raising money, increasing awareness, fighting prejudice and improving education.

Winter weather brings temptation to skip classes

Cancellations on-campus wanted, very rare

With winter months approaching and SRU's campus just on the edge of the Snow Belt, students waking up for classes are beginning to contemplate whether the lecture they have is worth braving the cold for. During the winter months in Slippery Rock, the last place many students want to be is outdoors, and the temptation to stay in can lead to more student absences during a time when attendance can be crucial.

College of Education receives accreditation for 53rd consecutive year

For the 53rd consecutive year, SRU's College of Education received accreditation by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). As of 2007, NCATE has accredited 638 institutions, with 78 other candidates still in the accreditation process.

SGA discussed UPB movie series advertising, budget

At Thursday's Student Government Association meeting, senators discussed a new initiative request by the University Program Board for the movie series, and voted to make the decision at the next Cooperative Activities Board meeting on Jan. 22. UPB requested that their budget be raised from $9,000 per semester to $15,000 per semester because they are now showing double features on Fridays and Saturdays, and an unknown amount for advertising.
