Even though most students were home for the holidays last weekend, Slippery Rock's women's field hockey team (2-1) was trying to earn their first victory of the season.
The team played hard and earned a 5-2 victory against Catawba College (N.C.) to bring their record on the season to 1-1.
The Rock's senior forward Jennifer Venet scored in the 57th and 59th minute to put the game away.
Sophomore midfielder Allie Hartman helped push the action early on, assisting on both of SRU's first two goals to give the Rock a 2-1 lead 17 minutes into the game.
The team's offense then became stagnant and Catawba came back to tie the score headed into the half.
"Catawba is a grass team, so they play a different style, there's no fast passing," Coach Stacey Hart said. "They like to go for the long outlet pass instead. We knew they'd [play] that way, but it took time for the girls to figure out how to play them - to really see Catawba's game plan in action."
Coach talked to them at halftime and reminded them of that.
"I was happy we weren't losing, but wasn't happy because we really should have been winning," Hart said.
It was obvious at the start of the second half that the lecture paid off.
Coach Hart yelled, "This is the team we are!" from the sidelines.
Coach Hart said she was pleased with how her team played in the second half.
"We were doing the things we need to do to win," Hart said. "The first passing combo after the second half whistle was perfect."
All in all, coach was happy with the team's performance, though she was confident that the game would be a victory on the schedule.
"I expected us to win that game," Hart said. "I wanted to get a new team on the schedule, and Catawba is down in North Carolina with no other D-II teams in the area."
Sophomore Samantha Badaczewski scored the go ahead goal in the 53rd minute.
The Rock managed to hold onto that lead until Venet added her two goals late in the game.
