Too much food is being wasted at SRU campus dining halls

Abstract:
Many SRU students attended Empty Bowls on Monday, Oct. 5-a fundraising project to raise awareness about hunger.

The question that went through my mind is: Although we have our own bowl from Empty Bowls, do we really think for a second time about food waste?

Boozel Dining Center is the best example on-campus of people wasting food....

I blame the poor choices of food. They make soups like Cream of Cauliflower, how many people do you know that like a soup like that? I do not know many. Or they have themed days such as the Vegetarian Fare. Why not offer vegan choices everyday? A day with only vegan items disappoints the majority of students(non-vegans) while a semester of non-vegan items disappoints the vegans daily. I feel if they had better options that less food would be wasted.

Everyday at lunch they offer Hamburgers, Cheeseburgers, Hot Dogs & Grilled Cheeses; all served with fries. Why are chicken tenders not on this list? Just about everyone likes chicken tenders. Another staple food choice for anyone is Macaroni & Cheese which is almost never offered. When was the last time you went to a buffet that did not serve Mac & Cheese? Another point to note is that they do not offer sides of fries with out asking. Many students are pressed for time at lunch and do not want to wait 5 minutes to be acknowledged by someone for a side of fries; a quick solution is to take a sandwich & fries. Often this results in the sandwich being wasted. Another reason for food waste is the length of the lines. A lot of students grab extra servings to avoid standing in the long line again.

Another major complaint I hear among my peers, and one that I also agree with is the awful taste of most of the food. College kids are easy to feed, we like a lot of simple things. We do not need things like Thai Chicken. We like staple home cooked meals, such as Baked Chicken, Turkey Dinner, Ham Dinner, Chicken Noodle Soup, Chili, Chicken Wings, Chicken Tenders, Lasagna, etc. You get the idea, evidence of the popularity of these kinds of meals can be seen on the nights when Boozel serves holiday dinners. I would venture to say the busiest night of the semester is the night they serve Thanksgiving Dinner. Ps, we like these kinds of food ALL day, not just for dinner.

Lastly there is one other thing I would like to mention. Most of the food portions are quite small. I am a light eater. As a reference, a McDonald's Happy Meal fills me up, yet most of the portion sizes at Boozel do not; I find myself going back for a second portion to fill up. Two portions are typically too much so I end up wasting part of the food.

Sadly, as with most of America the dessert selection is excellent.. Just what we all need... "Well, I guess I will just fill up on ice cream... again."
